Song of Choice

If you really think about it, you've probably already formed an opinion on my following topic. I'm not trying to be morbid here, but I have chosen the song to be played at my funeral. I didn't want to go through the trouble to put this in my will or anything, so here it is here. I'm counting on someone to remember this in eighty or so years when it becomes necessary.

I like the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," but I love it as IZ has arranged it. Check it out in this video. I couldn't find just the soundtrack for it. (Does anyone know if I can use my own music on Blogger? If so, how?)

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow

The second half of this post is - what's your choice for your funeral song? I already know the answer for a couple of you, but put it down anyway - unless of course you want it to be a surprise. Too soon? Sorry, I'm really not trying to be depressing. That's kind of the point of the song, really. It happens to the best of us. We might as well look on it as another part of life. I guess it depends on your theology. Anyway, have at it. I'm really interested. What's your song?

  1. For the last 5 years it's been "Smile" by Robert Randolph Band. I always come up with others, on a regular basis, but Smile has stuck. If you could actually get the RRB to come perform it, that'd be awesome and make it less likely that I will haunt you.

If David dies before me I will play "Goodbye my Lover" by James Blunt and I suppose he would be honored if we played "Annie's Song" as it's one of his all-time favorites.

LJ, I hope you haven't jinxed us with this post.

  2. Not strange at all. I have been planning my funeral for years. I want two songs sung: "Blessed Assurance" and "Just A Closer Walk." I can't wait to spend forever with my Lord! I think we should all talk about our funerals more. I have seen way too many unplanned deaths and families not sure how to handle it because they never discussed it.

  3. Jinxed us?! Seriously, Casey! Now what happens if one of us dies? Is it going to be my fault? Ugh.

Apparently I should stop blogging because I did, in fact, jinx February. Soph has croup. February not as grand as hoped. Oh well. To make it to Feb this year before getting something like croup is a very big deal, and I'm just thankful for that!

Thanks, Carrie. Requests duly noted. I, for one, am looking forward to it, but I can most certainly wait! I kind of like it here.

  4. Growing up my dad worked at the funeral home so I don't find this morbid - in fact, more people should plan and discuss funerals.

I want "Spirit in the Sky" at mine - yep, golden oldie, one hit wonder from 1969 (or '68) by Norman Greenbaum a Jewish man who mentions Jesus in the song. Should probably have Mitchell start learning it now. :o)

  5. Gena: "Whoop There It Is"
Mike: Brittany Spears' "Toxic" and Billy Squire's "The Stroke" and a pre-recorded spoken word track of just him saying and plainly enunciating words like "Globe", "Record", Entertainment Center", "Fire Place"... "Lamp", "Glasses", "Decanter", "Lincoln Logs", "Bookends", "How Now Brown Cow", "Sweat Tarts", "Armageddon"...

  6. If I die before Laurie, I want "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" played at my funeral. Laurie can run around all she wants claiming that she picked it first, but all people will remember is that she had the same song as her older brother.

If Laurie goes before me, then I'm gaining 200 pounds and singing this song shirtless at her funeral.

  7. DVD - If you die first, you get to choose, so no argument there. However, if you gain 200 pounds just to sing the song shirtless, you might as well go ahead and choose your second choice song because..... well, I'm just saying.

  8. Brothers! You can always count on them to figure out a way to threaten a damper on your plans.

  9. Oooo--can I borrow your song too? I never thought about it, but that's a great funeral song! Thanks for bringing this up, Laurie, because this forces me to think about one of my resolutions "write 'if you're reading this' letter". I avoid the thoughts of funerals, but really, really shouldn't because one just never knows. I'm glad to know I've got company.

On another note--Poor Sophia! And poor Laurie. You hanging in there?

  10. I know we have heard it a million times before but every time I hear "Amazing Grace" played on the bagpipes it gives me chills. The first line of the song "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me" seems pretty fitting also "I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see." The nice thing is that don't see this song losing any popularity in my lifetime.
